The Met Gala is an iconic charity event that raises money for the Costume Institute in the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City. It is organized by Anna Wintour and takes place on the first Monday of May every year. Stirring some controversy, this years theme was Karl Lagerfeld: A Line of Beauty. It was selected to honor the contributions that Karl has left behind in the fashion industry. Karl Lagerfeld is a notable fashion designer that has created iconic looks for fashion houses Chanel, Fendi, Balmain, Chloé, Patou, Tommy Hilfiger, and of course his very own Karl Lagerfeld. His creative mind is truly one to admire and he has definitely left a legacy behind. However, he is also very well known for his controversial statements in which some are pretty recent too. He's known to have been fatphobic and has called the #metoo movement "unnecessary". It is completely unfair and unjust that he is not being held accountable, hence the absences of some celebrities this year. It's evident that he was a powerful figure in the fashion industry, and his beautiful designs were unique and groundbreaking. Whilst celebrating his designs, please also recognize the hurtful actions that he has made.
On a lighter note, I can say that I am fairly impressed by this year's look. I am no fashion critic, but as someone who is very interested in fashion and keeps up with it everyday, I thought it'd be fun to share some of my favorite looks from last night. It's a pretty long list, but my absolute favorite looks were Anok Yai, Devon Aoki, Dua Lipa, Michelle Yeoh, Cardi B, Olivia Rodrigo, Adut Akech, and Russell Wesbrook. A lot of people paid homage to Karl Lagerfeld by wearing tweed, black and white, chains, bridal looks, and Camellias. I loved seeing all the different Camellias.
